Should i get a 50mm f1.4 prime lens or a 70-200mm zoom macro lens for a canon 7d?

i know both are different but this is my first dslr and really like the f1.4 but the zoom lens is pretty impressive, my question is what are the good and bad sides to each lens?

It really depends on what you want to take pictures of. Your subject matter and lighting conditions really determine what lens you need.

If you don’t already have a general-purpose zoom lens, I’d say start there. This would be a lens that varies from moderate wide-angle to moderate telephoto and is relatively light and compact so it’s easy to carry around. I use Nikons, but I have such a lens that I use most of the time, a 16-85mm lens. For the EOS 7d camera, which has an APS-C size sensor, that means a lens like the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 zoom if you’re on a budget, 15-85 IS for a somewhat wider zoom and image stabilization – a great combination, or the 17-55 f.2.8 if you’re going to be shooting mostly indoors in available light and are willing to carry a much bulkier and heavier lens.

If you start with just at 50mm or a 70-200 zoom, you’re going to be stuck in telephoto. You’ll have trouble shooting indoors, or in small urban spaces where you can’t back up a long way from your subject to get it all in. The 50mm is pretty compact and is used on APS-C cameras primarily for portraits, indoor sports and live performance. The strong points are the large f/1.4 aperture that gathers lots of lights and allows you to use higher shutter speeds to stop action in available light than slower lenses. The f/1.4 aperture also allows you to focus your subject and leave the foreground and background out of focus, great for portraits.

The 70-200 zoom (f/2.8 version) is also used for sports and live performance, shooting at a longer distance, like for outdoor sports, and for longer-distance portraits, or details of things, or for wildlife relatively close up. Its a very large and heavy lens for general use.
